If you are thinking of getting a new pet cat, or even already have one, it is important that you carry out a few checks to ensure your home is a safe place for your cat to live. Your cat spends a lot of time roaming around your home, exploring and protecting its territory, just like a wild cat.
Here are a few things to be aware of when making sure your home is cat friendly…
Install a cat flap
Cats are highly independent individuals and love to go out and explore. To enable them to do this, you should fit a cat flap in your door. This allows your cat to come and go as they please, without waking you up in the middle of the night by scratching on your door and making the famous ‘meow’ sound.
Check you have safe carpets
If you are a cat owner, it’s worth spending time assessing the carpet, mats and rugs you have in your home. The highter the wool content in the carpet, the better and safer for your cat. Cut pile is best as it can’t be destroyed as easily by your cat. Your cat’s hair also won’t build up as much on it. If you have any rugs, make sure there aren’t any loose bits that your cat’s claws may get stuck in.
Scratching and clawing
Scratching is just one of your cat’s many natural instincts. Not only does it keep their claws sharp for hunting, but it also helps them to mark their territory with scent and visual signals. To distract your cat from scratching at your furniture, carpet or curtains, introduce a scratching post.
Beware of your balcony
If you are lucky enough to have a balcony, it is really important to keep your outdoor area secure. Install fine mesh or trellis around the balustrade to make sure your cat isn’t tempted to poke their head through the gaps, leading them to getting stuck.
Keep free of poisonous items
There are many household items that are poisonous and potentially fatal for our feline friends. Things such as lily flowers, onions, chocolate and of course anti-freeze are highly dangerous. Make sure these things are kept out of reach of your cat at all times. Find out more about the common poisonous items here.
